Choosing a magician

A GUIDE TO CHOOSING A MAGICIAN FOR YOUR EVENT

So you have searched in google for a magician and you are absolutely confused by the choice available! There are several factors to look for when choosing a close up magician:

1. Look for a Magic Circle member. The Magic Circle is a prestigious famous organisation of which dedication and audition is required to be a member. Lets face it, you would not let an unqualified plumber deal with your plumbing! The Magic Circle is about the only badge of approval that exists for magicians. It's members include Magicians like Dynamo, David Copperfield and the late Paul Daniels.

2. Showreel. Look for a show reel that shows a magician with real audiences and look at their reactions. Get a general feel for the type of personality of the performer and how it will fit into your event.

3. Great pictures. Look for great pictures that look professional. Look for people smiling, looking amazed, and above all entertained. (People having a good time is what to look for!)

4. Client list and reviews. Google reviews and facebook reviews are an excellant way to see what other people think who have previously booked the performer.

5. Flexibility. This is very important as there are times when most parties, weddings and events do not run like clockwork. Being able to modify or adjust to your requirements on the day is a must.

6. Cost. A good magician is not cheap and a cheap magician may disappoint. Prices vary greatly but in general expect to pay an average of £300 to £400 for 2 hours of close up magic.

7. Your gut reaction! This can be very important as you are the one putting on the event and you know your guests better than anyone.

Booking through an agency can be a good idea and there are plenty of agencies online like Pop Top and Alive Network, but in general the fee's can be higher as opposed to going to direct to the entertainer through their website.

Remember, for every hour of a magician's time you can guarantee there has been 1000 hours gone into that. A good magician invests many hours of research and practice into achieving his/her skills.
